This was the first time we worked with a console. Thunder Lands was a GameBoy strategy game developed by Spanish indie group Cuchipandi Technologies. Though their name was somewhat ridiculous, they got some good projects and we joined them to work on the music.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
As most independent groups, Cuchipandi used a free sound engine. However, it was quite limited, so we introduced some changes on it to have better control of the sound output. It wasn't a great engine at all, but worked quite good. We also coded a new converter to fit the engine's new features. Music was composed as 4-channel MODs that were translated to inline code with the custom converter we made. We synthesized some samples (square and pulse waves, white noise, etc...) to work with the tracker, so we didn't need to constantly check how things would sound in the console.
INTERACTIVE MUSIC
After modifying the engine we started working on the music. We still keep some of the test ROMs we created using the engine. Music wasn't outstanding, but it still got the standard quality for a GameBoy game, so that was enough. We've added some of the music we made for the game below (only for chiptune lovers!)
